Spotlighting our recent Scion Graduates.
Breaking into web or software development can feel challenging without clear routes, industry experience, or the right support. The Scion scheme was created to help address those barriers.
In this article, we’re spotlighting a few of our recent Scion graduates and letting them tell their stories in their own words. From tackling real-world projects and tight deadlines to developing the mindset employers look for, their experiences show what’s possible when talent meets the right opportunity, support, and challenge.

1. What were your main goals when enrolling?
My main goals on the course were to get the experience I needed to distinguish myself from others and put me in a great position to secure a job as a web developer.
2. How did the course prepare you for real-world projects?
Having a project with expected deliverables and a deadline taught me how to manage my time and expectations for what I can achieve within the set time. I found this extremely valuable as these are the same expectations for a workplace.
3. Were there any challenges you faced during the training, and how did you overcome them?
One of my biggest challenges was overcoming difficulties and issues. No project will be quick and easy so understanding that it's okay to make mistakes as long as you use those mistakes as learning experiences for how to improve yourself was very important. Feedback from others and self-reflection are key to improving so getting familiar with this early on allowed me to use it as a strength instead of a weakness.
4. What advice would you give to someone considering this training?
My advice would be - work hard, take every opportunity to better yourself you can, and most importantly enjoy it!
1. What skills or technologies did you learn that were most valuable?
Laravel/PHP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript
2. How did the course prepare you for real-world projects?
Fast pace learning curves and working on a multitude of projects got me in the right mindset for a developer.
3. How did the course help you secure your current role?
It got me used to working towards deadlines and having the appropriate time management skills needed to produce work at a sufficient speed.
4. What advice would you give to someone considering this training?
It's a fantastic gateway into web/software development and will give you the skills needed to get yourself into the industry.
5. Would you recommend the course to others? If so, why?
Yes, I would, it sets realistic goals but also pushes you to your fullest while also having the mentoring to help you when stuck.
6. What are your next steps or aspirations in web development?
Higher proficiency in Laravel and to get a good portfolio of commercial projects under my belt.
1. What skills or technologies did you learn that were most valuable?
Aside from programming skills, one of the most valuable skills I learned independently while on the course was time management, it allowed me to complete one task after another within the due dates.
2. How did the course prepare you for real-world projects?
The course prepared me for real-world projects in the way I was given tasks and can complete them within the criteria and due date, as well as getting feedback from a senior developer and actioning the feedback.
3. What advice would you give to someone considering this training?
If someone else can do it, so can you, you're not any less capable, as long as there are online resources and documentation, anyone can learn anything.
These stories demonstrate how the Scion scheme helps people build the skills, experience, and confidence needed to take their first steps into the tech industry. Through hands-on projects, mentoring, and clear expectations, participants are supported as they prepare for real-world development roles.
