Scion Success Stories

Spotlighting our recent Scion Graduates.

Written by Emily Caseley

Breaking into web or software development can feel challenging without clear routes, industry experience, or the right support. The Scion scheme was created to help address those barriers.

In this article, we’re spotlighting a few of our recent Scion graduates and letting them tell their stories in their own words. From tackling real-world projects and tight deadlines to developing the mindset employers look for, their experiences show what’s possible when talent meets the right opportunity, support, and challenge.

1. What made you decide to join the web development course?

With a background in C++, I already had a technical foundation, but I wanted to pivot my career at a later stage in life. I was looking for a course that was both comprehensive and offered the ongoing support of both a professional company and a peer group, which is exactly what the Scion Scheme provided.

2. What was your technical background before starting the course?

Prior to the course, I spent three years as a video game developer. With the shifts in the gaming industry, I wanted to expand my horizons and translate my love of coding into the web development space.

3. How did the course prepare you for real-world projects?

The sheer breadth of knowledge has had the most impact. Having a full-stack skill set, from HTML through to MySQL, gives me the depth of knowledge required to speak confidently and professionally with clients.

4. How did the course help you secure your current role?

The course gave me the technical confidence to move into self-employment. It not only prepared me to secure my own clients but also opened up interests in areas I hadn't previously considered, such as Python.

5. What advice would you give to someone considering this training?

At times, the learning curve can feel overwhelming, but don't be discouraged. If you work hard, stay focused, and keep moving forward, the pieces will eventually fall into place.

1. What were your main goals when enrolling?

My main goals were to improve my front-end and full-stack development skills, learn how to use tools and workflows that are useful in the industry, build a professional portfolio, and get ready to get a job as a software developer.

2. What skills or technologies did you learn that were most valuable?

I learned a lot of useful skills, such as HTML, CSS, Sass, JavaScript, PHP, WordPress, responsive design, Git and GitHub workflows, database integration, and how to work with structured development practices. It was very helpful to learn how these technologies work together in a real project setting.

3. Were there any challenges you faced during the training, and how did you overcome them?

One of the hardest parts was keeping track of all the different technologies and making sure I knew not only how they worked but also why they worked that way. I got through that by sticking to my plan, breaking problems down into smaller pieces, carefully reviewing important ideas, and seeing each problem as a chance to learn instead of a setback.

4. What did you enjoy most about the course?

The projects were the best part for me because they showed me how far I'd come. It was great to go from learning ideas to actually building things that looked professional and functioned properly. I also liked how the course mixed creativity, logic, and problem-solving.

5. How did the course help you secure your current role?

The course helped me get my current job by giving me practical experience, relevant portfolio work, and confidence in discussing development tasks and workflows in a professional setting. It showed employers that I could learn quickly, apply technical knowledge, and work on real projects rather than only talk about theory.

1. What made you decide to join the web development course?

I had been interested in computers and programming for a long time, but after many years in teaching I decided it was time to move into tech professionally. The Scion Coalition Scheme appealed to me because it offered a structured, intensive route into web development with support from experienced developers.

2. What was your technical background before starting the course?

My professional background was in teaching, including SEN and supply roles, so although I wasn't coming from a tech job, I was used to explaining things clearly, staying organised, and adapting quickly.

3. How did the course prepare you for real-world projects?

The course was very practical, so I was constantly building projects rather than only learning theory. Working across different types of builds, including React, Laravel, WordPress and responsive front-end work, helped me get used to briefs, deadlines, feedback and solving problems in a structured way.

4. What advice would you give to someone considering this training?

Go into it ready to work hard, stay curious and keep an open mind. The course moves quickly, so being consistent, willing to ask for help and prepared to learn from mistakes makes a huge difference. You don't need to know everything at the start, but you do need to be willing to keep going when something feels difficult. Asking questions and sticking with problems matters a lot.

5, Would you recommend the course to others? If so, why?

Yes, absolutely. It gives you structured learning, practical experience and support from people who understand the industry, which makes it a very strong route into web development, especially for career changers.
