Netmatters Celebrates the King’s Award for Enterprise
Netmatters marks the King’s Award for Enterprise: Promoting Opportunity 2025 with a special ceremony honouring the Scion Scheme and its community impact.
Netmatters proudly hosted an official celebration event this week in honour of receiving the King’s Award for Enterprise: Promoting Opportunity 2025. The ceremony brought together current team members, past Scions who continue to work at Netmatters, and representatives of the Lieutenancy, marking a significant milestone in our history.
Honouring the Scion Scheme
In attendance were several alumni of the Scion scheme who have since built successful careers within the business.
Founded in 2017, the Scion Scheme provides accessible pathways into technology careers for individuals who may not otherwise have had the opportunity. Through hands-on training, professional development, and ongoing support, the scheme has become a cornerstone of our commitment to promoting opportunity and social mobility.
The Ceremony
The official proceedings began with a speech from the Lord Lieutenant, Lady Dannatt, who highlighted the prestige of the King’s Award for Enterprise — the highest honour a UK business can achieve.
As recipients of the Award for Promoting Opportunity, Netmatters was recognised for its work supporting individuals from disadvantaged or underrepresented backgrounds, enabling them to gain the skills and confidence needed to enter the technology sector.
Managing Director, James Gulliver, then addressed the room, formally acknowledging the significance of the Scion Scheme within Netmatters. He spoke about the scheme’s vital role in shaping both the business and the careers of those who have taken part, noting that its impact represents one of the company’s proudest achievements. Course Manager, Kayleigh Hall, followed with remarks on the development and delivery of the programme, reflecting on the professional satisfaction of supporting learners as they progress into their careers.We also heard from former Scion, Rosario Furia, on the opportunities the programme provided, as well as from Dieter Harper on the growth of Laptops 4 Learning, and Tessa Dempsey on delivering the Scion Scheme through COVID-19.
The Deputy Lieutenant, Julia Nix OBEthen spoke, acknowledging her early collaboration with James and the Department for Work and Pensions in 2017 during the scheme’s formation, and commending the progress it has made since its inception.
The Reading of the Deed of Appointment
To formally mark the achievement, the Lord Lieutenant presented and read the Deed of Appointment — an official document setting out the purpose of the award and confirming the period for which Netmatters holds the honour.
A Moment of Celebration
With the formalities concluded, guests enjoyed a celebratory buffet and reflected on the success of the Scion Scheme, the dedication of the Netmatters team, and the privilege of receiving a King’s Award for Enterprise. This event represents a proud moment for everyone involved — celebrating not only the accomplishments to date, but the continued positive impact Netmatters strives to deliver within the community.
